Monique Zhang’s “a la Shangrila” Fashion Show: Beauty Knows No Age

Monique Zhang’s “a la Shangrila” Fashion Show: Beauty Knows No Age

Highlights from “a la Shangrila” fashion show by Monique Zhang during Friends of On Lok’s 26th Annual Generations Fashion Show Luncheon on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at Empress of China, San Francisco If you read September 2014’s article about my collaboration with Monique Zhang at her Bridal Religion studio, then you get a sense of how much I admire Monique’s talents. And at the end of the article, I mentioned about Monique’s fashion show during On Lok’s charity fashion show. Well, this article is about that. Monique presented 5 different segments as the finale runway show during Friends of On Lok’s 26th Annual Generations Fashion Show Luncheon on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at Empress of China, San Francisco. Monique asked me two months ago whether I’d walk on her fashion show. Initially, I was flattered but wasn’t sure whether I’d be able to make it. Thankfully, it was meant to be…so I did walk to show off two Monique Zhang outfits! Can you spot me in the photos below? After several months of not touching his camera since July’s J-Pop Summit Festival, Chris was once again in action, capturing moments for all five segments of Monique Zhang’s “a la Shangrila” fashion show. The On Lok luncheon featured various kinds of entertainment, from Ling Ling Chinese Dress Designs, Feng Yang Flower Drum Dance, kids’ entertainment, a Chinese ribbon dance solo, Victor Tung Couture Designs, to Orange Caterpillar menswear designs. Monique’s fashion showcase was the final segment of the day, featuring beautiful oriental chic designs worn by women of all ages and wedding dresses for would-be-brides. Browse them all below! Trying Denim on Denim look at Battery Boutelle

Trying Denim on Denim look at Battery Boutelle

I’ve never been a fan of denim on denim look, although that particular trend always finds itself back year after year after year. Call me old-fashioned if you will, but denim on denim look is best suited for a person with solid physical stamina and strength, slaving under the sun daily at a gold mine somewhere. Me? Well, let’s say I’m currently very much removed from that concept :) Therefore, I was ready to dismiss the entire thing once and for all. And one day, I saw a vintage black and white photograph of Ralph Lauren wearing denim on denim on denim. Denim jacket on top of a denim button-down shirt, with jeans. I was simply mesmerized. How could he look so stylish and cool with outfit pieces that were so….gold-mine-ish? Needless to say, from that moment on, I was waiting for the right time to try the denim on denim look. Just once is enough. On Saturday, June 23, the occasion finally arrived. We planned to go to Chillin’ Production later that night (we did went, it was great), but we wanted to do a little walking down the Battery Boutelle trail. Not wanting to change clothes from day to night, I opted for this denim on denim outfit. For the “rough” terrain, I had to switch out my boots to this hiking shoes, but the rest was intact from day to night :) This photo shoot was totally accidental (the ruin settings were just too cool, it’d be a waste to pass up the opportunity for a mini session with), and I was so happy with the...

San Francisco Fashion Week + Upcoming Bay Area Festivals

Can you believe it’s August already? That it’s only 5 more months until the end of 2011. INSANE. All the more reason to truly enjoy each moment, especially this nice mild summer weather :) The month will start off (for me) with the Mélange Fashion Show on August 6, at San Francisco Design Center, 8 PM – 12 AM. This exciting show blends fashion, music, theater, and dance. I am so excited to be covering this show and can’t wait for the weekend to arrive already! OK, so much for that message at the beginning about “enjoying every moment” :) One thing you definitely cannot miss this month is definitely the San Francisco Fashion Week, August 8 – 14. A week long celebration of local San Francisco fashion workshops, exhibits, and trunk shows, that are capped with three runway shows at the end of the week at Wix Lounge & Tent, 2601 Mission Street (at 22nd) 3rd Fl, San Francisco, CA: Friday, August 12 – Emerging Designers (get tickets) Saturday, August 13 – Ready to Wear (get tickets) Sunday, August 14 – Avant Garde (get tickets) Dress code is enforced, so if you’re coming from Outside Lands (for example), you perhaps want to carry a change of cocktail-party clothes :) The week after that is Art & Soul Festival at Downtown Oakland, August 20 – 21, noon to 6 PM. I have a confession to make; I found out about this festival when one day I had this urge to listen to Five for Fighting and I was wondering when can I see John Ondrasik live. So I went to...
Art Institute of California San Francisco Fashion Lineup Spring 2011 Review

Art Institute of California San Francisco Fashion Lineup Spring 2011 Review

I was looking forward for the Art Institute of California – San Francisco’s spring fashion show since early this year, and this year’s presentation of Art Institute of California Fashion Lineup really highlighted great talents and creative concepts. The fact that four of the six winners of the night were the ones doing the Independent Fashion Show back in April also really (somehow) made me very proud of them :) The fashion show production was as professional as ever (kudos to all of the production crew; job well done!) and the three judges this year were Bacca da Silva, Angela Medlin, and Joseph Domingo. I do agree completely with their winner picks; all six of them are fully noted here. As always, awesome photography by Christian Hadidjaja, and here are the collections of the night: Scene 1: Synthetic vs. Natural Collection by Autie Carlisle: I first saw Autie’s collection during the Constituent Parts Fashion Show, so seeing them here only refreshed my memory of how great these pieces were constructed. Plus, the  lighting actually helped me see the details more :) Autie Carlisle - SyntheticVsNatural, AIC-SF 2011May 18, 2012Photos: 9   Collection by Rachel Poulos: Similarly, I also first this collection during the Constituent Parts Fashion Show. But I still have mad love for that orange-red dress. Rachel, I want one! By the way, Rachel is the runner-up for Best Construction award of the night. She gets a PGM dress form (I hope she gets what she wants: dress form size 8).
