I have to say, this year’s Baby The Stars Shine Bright lolita fashion contest picked up right where it left off last year. Seriously, my initial doubt about this year’s contestants quality (just because last year’s were really amazing) was instantly obliterated.
Outstanding lolita fashion outfits featuring at least one Baby The Stars Shine Bright or Alice and the Pirates garment worn by equally outstanding personalities graced the Peace Pagoda Plaza on Sunday, August 26, 2012. Moreover, this year marked the 3rd anniversary of Baby The Stars Shine Bright’s store at New People (it has been a staple since the building was built). So naturally, a Happy Birthday theme is also incorporated to this year’s contest!
The interest for this year’s fashion contest was so great, there were a whooping 24 finalists presenting their outfits. What’s more, two out of the 24 were male contestants! Finally! It’s about time male contestants join the fun. When one of them is asked why he decided to be a lolita, he responded by saying it’s a way to connect with his girlfriend, who is into the whole gothic lolita movement. How cute! And apparently the male contestants scored high with the judges. Bryan (pictured right) won 2nd place. I’m looking forward to see more male contestants next year!
This year, I felt the atmosphere was more consistent: the contestants were confident, prepared with great stories or sound bites, and their personalities shone through. It’s a very light, fun times in the midst of detailed, colorful, and carefully constructed lolita outfits. The contestants really did a great job looking, acting, and sounding the part they chose to become in the Baby The Stars Shine Bright fashion contest. Some used their lolita names, such as “The Cupcake is A Lot” or “Queen Alice”; some used the character names from the Alice in the Wonderland story, such as “Queen of Hearts” or “White Rabbit”; some felt comfortable using their real names. Either way, they were all looking gorgeous.
One of my favorites (who did not eventually win a prize, but she’s a winner in my eyes) is this clad-in-purple Cheshire Cat, complete with a pair of customized Necomimi. That long tail that doubled up as a shawl also raked bonus points for me. In a competition where the Cheshire Cat looks or elements were certainly popular, she stood out for me.
See all of the looks, as well as the winners in the photo album below. Do your favorites win?
Thank you once again to Christian Hadidjaja for the gorgeous pictures. As usual, please click once on the image below to expand the whole album. By the way, the first two pictures are of the judges; they looked great, did they not?
